Successful appointments at Executive level are critical to a business like British property investment and construction specialist, Henry Boot PLC. Ten years of finding them the right candidates has cemented Ashley Hoyle as a key strategic partner.
Henry Boot PLC is one of the UK’s leading land, property and land investment, development and construction companies. With a focus on long-term sustainable growth, this family controlled PLC has specific and exacting senior recruitment requirements and very high standards and expectations.
So, when CEO Jamie Boot asked Ashley Hoyle to find them a new Chairman and non-Executive Director in 2005, it was the start of a long-term, fruitful relationship.
The Chairman test
The search for a new Chairman was particularly important as it signalled a step-change in the evolution of the organisation, with the Board to be chaired by a non-family member for the first time. Ashley Hoyle, through their exceptional contact network and keen understanding of the nature of the organisation and the significance of the role, placed John Brown, who was Senior Independent Non-executive Director, and went on to Chair the Board in a full term of 9 years.
“What was great about John was that he held a number of other Chairman roles in related sectors and was able to bring best practices to us and an incredibly helpful independent view. It was a big change for us to take on an external chair and John’s expertise, personality and background made him a great fit,” said Boot. “Ashley Hoyle’s understanding of our business, culture and environment was clearly evident in the candidates they put forward, and especially in John.”
The appointment of Michael Gunston, Non-Executive Director, to the Board at the same time, and John Sutcliffe as FD (both through Ashley Hoyle), contributed towards setting Henry Boot on a critical path that saw it navigate and weather the financial storm and come out the other end stable and well placed for growth.
From FD to CEO
The appointment of John Sutcliffe as FD in 2006 was a clear success for Henry Boot. The organisation has since developed a strong relationship with The City, thanks to better communication and openness, which has also positively impacted the company’s culture. So much so, that John will become CEO.
“Roger Hoyle has a great affinity with people and reads people very well. The personal service Ashley Hoyle provides is second to none and I’ve not experienced anything else like it in corporate recruitment before,” said Sutcliffe.
The Next Generation
After finding Henry Boot a new company secretary in 2013, Ashley Hoyle has played a key role in the company’s most recent evolution. In 2015, several retirements and promotions, including that of John to CEO, led to three new Board openings, all of which were filled by Ashley Hoyle.
“The three new recruits support the strategic direction we are taking and importantly, they complement each other and the existing Board members. We were also very keen to bring more diversity to our Board and we think that this new dynamic will help put us in good stead for a strong, sustainable future,” said Boot.
Joanne Lake, Non-Executive Director, has a financial background and will bring significant corporate knowledge and experience, as well as continuing the strong link with the City that has been established. Talking about the process of her appointment, she said: “Due to the nature of the role, the process was quite lengthy and I really appreciated how Ashley Hoyle kept me updated. They were very reassuring, helpful and professional throughout. The full and detailed brief they gave me about the role was great as it made me feel confident that it was a role I really wanted and it prepared me well for the interview process.”
Gerald Jennings, who has significant property development and investment expertise with Land Securities plc, will be another new Non-Executive Director and Peter Mawson, ex CEO of Donaldsons LLP, with an extensive planning background, also makes him a very suitable Non-Executive Director.
“Ashley Hoyle have played a key role in the evolution of our Executive Team over the last ten years and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a bespoke, personal and flexible service that focuses on meeting your exacting needs,” concluded Boot.
